What UPPAbaby Actually Said

UPPAbaby’s December 2025 post on its CleanTech collection is short. It covers two infant car seats, the Mesa V3 and the Aria V2, and one convertible seat, the Rove, and its point is that each uses a fabric system made without fire-retardant chemicals.

An earlier version of this article built its argument on the Mesa V2, a merino “Alice” version of it and the Vista V2 travel system, and credited the post with stain resistance, GREENGUARD Gold and a flammability-standard claim. The post doesn’t mention any of those seats or claims. UPPAbaby no longer sells the Mesa V2 either; the Mesa V3 replaced it. What follows sticks to the post, with UPPAbaby’s product pages as the source for anything the post doesn’t say.

The Three Fabric Systems

CleanTech is UPPAbaby’s name for the whole family. Underneath it sit three systems:

  • SafeTech (Mesa V3): the post calls it a fire-retardant-free material that meets safety standards with no chemical treatments, and says it’s removable and washable.
  • DualTech (Aria V2): fire-retardant-free in both the fabric and the foam, according to the post, which also mentions REACH-certified full-grain leather handle accents.
  • PureTech (Rove): introduced on the Rove convertible seat as the third CleanTech category. The Rove page describes it as a naturally fire-retardant-free merino wool fabric that’s hypoallergenic and temperature-regulating.

The distinction between SafeTech and DualTech matters if chemical exposure is your reason for caring. SafeTech is described as a fabric claim. DualTech extends the claim to the foam underneath.

What the Product Pages Add

The post doesn’t mention certifications, but UPPAbaby’s product pages do:

  • Mesa V3: GREENGUARD Gold certified, with seat fabric free from flame-retardant chemicals, and removable, washable seat fabric.
  • Aria V2: GREENGUARD Gold certified, with fabric and foam free from fire-retardant chemicals, and removable, machine-washable seat and canopy fabrics.
  • Rove: GREENGUARD Gold certified, with fire-retardant-free foam across its DualTech and PureTech fabrics.

GREENGUARD Gold is UL’s certification for products with low chemical emissions. It’s a materials certification, separate from crash protection, and federal rules don’t require it. The seat still has to pass FMVSS 213, and UPPAbaby’s pages say the Mesa V3 and Aria V2 meet the newer 213a and 213b side and frontal impact standards.

Where Fabric Fits in the Decision

Fabric is a reasonable tie-breaker, not a first filter. Fit to your child, fit to your car and correct installation come first, and the AAP makes the point that no one seat is the “best” or “safest”: the best seat is the one that fits your child and vehicle and is used correctly every time.

If you’re choosing a Mesa, the current seat is the V3, rated by UPPAbaby for 4 to 30 pounds and up to 32 inches. Our UPPAbaby Mesa review covers how it differs from the retired V2, including what to check if you’re offered a V2 second-hand. UPPAbaby Mesa V3 Infant Car Seat

Best infant seat for UPPAbaby Vista and Cruz owners

UPPAbaby's 2025 refresh of the Mesa carrier focuses on small-fit ergonomics (25-position headrest, magnetic buckle holders) rather than installation hardware (no load leg). Mesa V3 is the natural pick if you already own a Vista or Cruz; the lower 30 lb cap and no load leg are the trade-offs.

What We Like

  • 25-position no-rethread headrest (V2 had 4 positions)
  • Magnetic buckle holders keep straps clear during loading
  • Full-coverage canopy with UPF 50+ and a mesh peek-a-boo window
  • European Belt Routing for secure baseless installation
  • FAA certified for aircraft use

What We Don't

  • Base lacks a load leg (Bambi Baby flags this vs Nuna and Cybex)
  • Rear-facing weight cap dropped from 35 lbs (V2) to 30 lbs
  • More limited stroller cross-brand compatibility (Vista, Cruz direct; Minu, Ridge with adapters)
  • MSRP and street price not publicly listed on extracted UPPAbaby pages at audit time

Frequently Asked Questions

Which UPPAbaby car seats does the CleanTech post cover?
The Mesa V3 and Aria V2 infant seats, with a mention of the Rove convertible seat. It doesn't cover the older Mesa V2 or the Vista stroller, and UPPAbaby no longer sells the Mesa V2.
What are SafeTech, DualTech and PureTech?
They're the three fabric systems UPPAbaby groups under the CleanTech name. SafeTech, on the Mesa V3, is a fire-retardant-free fabric. DualTech, on the Aria V2 and Rove, keeps fire-retardant chemicals out of both the fabric and the foam. PureTech, on the Rove, is a merino wool fabric UPPAbaby describes as naturally fire-retardant-free.
Are the fabrics GREENGUARD Gold certified?
UPPAbaby's product pages say so for the Mesa V3, the Aria V2 and the Rove. GREENGUARD Gold is UL's certification for low chemical emissions. It says nothing about crash performance, and federal rules don't require it.
Can I wash the covers?
UPPAbaby lists removable, washable seat fabric on the Mesa V3, and removable, machine-washable seat and canopy fabrics on the Aria V2. Follow the care instructions in your seat's manual.
